An ordinance on the subject of incandescent and electric
:' light signs; allowing the use of and regulating the cl~aracter
and use of same and. repealing all parts of other ordinances in
conflict with this ordinance.
" ¥ The Board of Trustees of 'the City of Bakersfield do
ordain as follows:
Sec.tion 1. No person, company or corporation shall.here-
after'place or maintain upon, or attach to, any building or
premises· any incand6, scent and eleStric sign, advertisement,
transparency or bulletin board which sha-ll project over or
I. upon the sidewalk, except such as are embraced within the
· following classes:
Class 1. Incandescent and electric light signs and
~! thO"front of the build~ng, and not projecting the~2~from over
!. the sidewa.lk more than twelve (12)'i~n-Ches when placed _~'~
feet or more above the sidewalk.
For the purpose of this ~rdinance, the term "front of
building" shall be construed to mean the general outer sur-
face of the main wall of the building facing the street,
except, 'in the case of bay windows or pillars projecting
..~ beyond the main wall of the building, the outer surface of
such-windows or pill(~rs shall be considered tile face of the
b~ilding at tho~e points.
Class 2. Incandescent electric light signs not exceed-
lng six (6) feet in vertical dimension, fastened to a metal
frs_me and extending over the sidewalk, provided no part of

: sidewalk, nor p~oject beyond the outer edge of the
and fttrther provided that such sign and metal franc shall be
attached to the buildin~ by means of s~itable hinges or

j ject more than eighteen (18) inches from the face of the

Provided, further~,~ .that~ said incandescent electric light
signs shall not %be extended-over or across the sidew~.lk ex-
cept between the hours of 5 p. m. and 8 a. m., and shall be
" continuously illuminated every night from su~set to midnight
when so extended. No incandescent electric light sign of the
above description shall be attached to any building until a
design of the sign and method of fasteni, ng to the building

..and a written permit received from said Board authorizing its

Seo~ B. Any person violating any of the provisions of
this Ordinance, or doing any act herein declared to be unlaw-
~l, is~z_~.~*v of a misde~E~anor, and upon conviction ~here-
of shall be punished by a fine' no% exceeding t~ee hundred
.. (SOO) dollars, or by imprisonment in the city or county jail
' prisonment.
Section S. All ordinances and parts of Ordinances in
conflict w~.th any of the provisions' of this Ordinance are
hereby repealed. Th~s Ordinance shall take effect and be in
force from and after its passage, and publication according
to law.
